Fashion at the CFDA Awards

We have high hopes re the red carpet when the soiree in question is held by the Council of Fashion Designers of America – an event which recognises the best in American womenswear, menswear, jewellery and accessory designers.

Not many surprised faces in the crowd when the winners were announced - Lady Gaga won Fashion Icon of the Year, Marc Jacobs got the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement and the UK represented with Hilary Alexander of The Telegraph getting the Eugenia Sheppard Media Award.

Lady Gaga in custom Mugler

Read on for some red carpet looks.

Kerry Washington keeps it simple and chic in Calvin Klein Collection.

Zac Posen with Sessilee Lopez wearing Zac Posen. Do all those seams at front make her look larger?

Chanel Iman in BCBG Max Azria. Love the easy waves in her hair.

Jessica Alba, pregnant and lovely in custom Diane von Furstenberg.

Never-looks-bad Liya Kebede in Derek Lam.

Model Anais Mali in Sophie Théallet with the designer.

Rachel Roy and Joy Bryant, both wearing Rachel Roy. They look like they're having a good time.

Fashion at the Met Costume Institute Gala

Stars of film, fashion, television and music were at The Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Costume Institute Gala last night which honoured the late, great, Alexander McQueen.

Naomi Campbell (who's made it onto a few worst dressed lists) said of him: ‘He was a very sensitive, very instinctive and intuitive person - private and a very affectionate and lovely man. He was a monstrous talent.’

Celebrity attendees included SJP, Gisele, Rihanna, Jessica Alba and Beyonce and Jay-Z who were booed by photographers for failing to stop for extra pictures!

We’re more interested in who did stop!

Jennifer Lopez in Gucci. The colour looks gorgeous on her. The shoulders take the floral trend to a new level!

Rihanna in Stella McCartney. As usual she shows a lot without showing a lot. Not sure about The Little Mermaid inspired hair.

Beyonce is curvy perfection in Emilio Pucci. It looks really tight - how did she walk? Or breathe? The things we do for fashion! Feeling Jay's lo 'fro.

Tamara Mellon, Thandie Newton (who never looks bad) in Stella McCartney with Freida Pinto in Chanel.

Kerry Washington in Escada. Gorgeous dress and we love the 80's inspired hair.

Solange in Dries Van Noten. Umm...we like her hair. That's it.

A very serious Ciara in Prabal Gurung. Beautiful, beautiful dress.

Alicia Keys in Givenchy. Too much brown drowns her and the jacket brings the dress down.

Eva Mendes smoulders in Stella McCartney. This lady certainly knows how to work a red carpet.

Rashida Jones underwhelms in Stella McCartney. It's not a bad dress, it just doesn't have much wow for an occasion as wow worthy as this.

Zoe Saldana in Calvin Klein. Simple and elegant and love the easy waves in her hair.

Janelle Monae in The House of Chanel. We're getting a bit bored of this look now.

Iman in Stella McCartney. She looks stunning but we don't recommend matching your outfit with your hair.

Jennifer Hudson in Vera Wang with Vera Wang. It's a little bridesmaid'y.

John Legend and Christine Teigen. A little too 'showgirl' for us but fitting for an event like this we suppose.

Nicole Ritchie in Jason Wu. Very 'old Hollywood'.

Joan Smalls in Tom Ford looks supermodel perfect.

Serena Williams in Oscar de la Renta. Could have worked sans the hat.

Fashion at the NAACP Image Awards

The 42nd NAACP (America’s oldest and largest civil rights organisation) were held in LA yesterday to celebrate the achievements and performances of people of colour in television, recording, literature, motion picture and writing & directing, as well as individuals or groups who promote social justice through their creative endeavours.

Winners included:

Outstanding actress in a comedy series: Vanessa Williams in Desperate Housewives
Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series: Sofia Vergara in Modern Family
Outstanding actress in a drama series: Regina King in Southland (love her)
Outstanding actor in a TV Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special: Idris Elba in Luther (yay for the Brit!)

There were some beautiful gowns on some even more beautiful women. We pick our favourite ladies over the page.

Halle Berry in Emilio Pucci. Flawless as usual.

Kerry Washington in Zac Posen dress and Jimmy Choo clutch. Simple but beautiful.

Keisha Knight-Pulliam. Could work on her red carpet posing but holds a special place in our heart as we wanted to be in her TV family.

Vanessa Williams. Fabulous in Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty. And we liked that song she put out in the 90s.

Angela Bassett. Another one who deserves more recognition than she gets.

Grey's Anatomy's Chandra Wilson. Meredith Grey made us stop watching circa Season 2.

Sofia Vergara. A deserving winner.

Tatyana Ali. Still so cute!

Tia Mowry from Sister Sister. Remember that show?!

Fashion at the 2011 Independent Spirit Awards

The Independent Spirit Awards are held, traditionally the day before the Oscars, to celebrate the best in independent film making.

Unsurprisingly, Black Swan won Best Feature, Best Director and Best Female Lead for a very stylish and very pregnant Natalie Portman.

We were rather keen on these ladies ensembles:

Kerry Washington in a floral Dolce & Gabbana dress, Sergio Rossi shoes and Roger Vivier clutch.

Rosario Dawson in a Burberry dress and Brian Atwood heels.

Zoe Saldana in a Dolce & Gabbana dress, Brian Atwood heels and a Bottega Veneta clutch.

Bryan Adams for Calvin Klein?

What comes to mind when you think of Bryan Adams? For us it’s those 16 long weeks in 1991 when the sound of ‘Everything I Do’ was reverberating through our ears. But 90’s ballad singer no more! Adams, now a respected photographer, has teamed up with Calvin Klein Collection to create a series of images for the charity NYC AIDS Fund.

Called American Women 2010, the 12 stars were photographed wearing Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa. We particularly liked:
