o Before applying nail polish, assure you clean your nails with a polish remover to remove any traces of oil. Always apply a base coat and a top coat. While the base coat helps in the preservation of the color, the top coat guards the enamel. Applying a top coat everyday could extend the life of your manicure and your nail color.
o After applying the cuticle cream in your hand, gently push the cuticles back with an orange stick and never chip the cuticles.
o While applying polish, apply two or three coats of 'thin' polish. Adding few drops of thinner to the bottle makes the polish thin. Though the first coat may seem pale, the second coat can strengthen the color by covering any flaws. Thick coats can chip off easily; avoid it.
o Always make sure you leave a hairline gap between the nail and the cuticle, while polishing. This prevents the color from bleeding and also makes the nails appear longer.
o If the nails starts to break, trim it. For a quick fix, use a nail glue to the crack and once it dries buff till smooth. You can then apply nail polish on top to make things look better.
o As far as possible keep your nails short. In fact, do keep your nails short when wearing bright shades and a little longer for lighter shades. Make sure you keep your hand moisturized at all times.
o Diseases can be easily spread by unhygienic manicure equipment. Make sure that all the equipments are neat and clean and if you are doing a manicure in the parlor, assure that the tools are sterilized.
Your nails can go weak or start flaking because of constant mistreatment from harsh detergents, cleaning agents, nail glue and acetone remover etc. Incorrect filing of nails can also damage it. Rough cuticles is because of cuticle clipping, picking or biting. All this can be got rid of only with proper attention and care.
